Hydro One customers continue to conserve energy, help the environment

Apr 22, 2010

TORONTO, April 22 /CNW/ - Hydro One's customers are leading Ontario's efforts to build a culture of conservation. Hydro One customers across the province are saving more than 450 million kilowatt hours annually through conservation and demand management programs. That's enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes for a year, resulting in greenhouse gas emission savings of more than 300,000 tonnes of CO2.

"Hydro One's programs provide a range of incentives to help customers save electricity and money, and ease strain on the provincial electricity grid during peak demand periods," said Giuliana Rossini, Director, Strategy and Conservation Officer of Hydro One. "Through our energy-saving programs, we are working in partnership with our customers to promote a conservation culture in Ontario and at the same time help our customers reduce their electricity costs."

How did our customers meet the challenge?
    By the end of 2009:

    - Almost 70,000 old, energy-guzzling refrigerators, freezers, and air
conditioners were picked up and disposed of in an environmentally
friendly manner through the Great Refrigerator Roundup program.
    - Over 25,000 customers, mostly residential, chose to have a free
thermostat with load control capability installed in their homes
        through peaksaver(OM).
    - Over 4,500 small businesses received a lighting audit and up to
$1,000 for free lighting retrofits to their facility.
    - Over 1,200 medium to large businesses planned capital investments for
energy efficiency upgrades and applied for rebates through the
        Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program(ERIP).
    - Over 13,000 customers used the PowerSaverPlus online home energy
audit tool and received valuable tips on how to improve their home's
