Hydro One supports Black students in the electricity industry with its longest-standing scholarship

TORONTO, February 26, 2021 – Today, Hydro One announced the four recipients of its longest-standing scholarship, the William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award, for Black students in recognition of Hubbard’s contributions to developing hydroelectric power in Ontario.

“At Hydro One, we believe a better and brighter future depends on an equitable and inclusive workplace that embraces diversity as a strength,” said Megan Telford, Chief Human Resources Officer, Hydro One. “We’re proud to support and recognize Black students pursuing careers in the electricity industry with our longest-standing scholarship, the William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award.”

 

This year’s recipients are: 

  • Jessica Bertley, University of Waterloo, Electrical Engineering

  • Ayman Abdulkadir, Ontario Tech University, Mechatronics Engineering

  • Kwaze Gayle, University of Toronto, Commerce Finance and Economics

  • Yonael Debebe, University of Waterloo, System Design Engineering

Award winners receive a $5,000 scholarship and are offered a paid work-term at Hydro One.

Hydro One’s William Peyton Hubbard Memorial Award, established in 1992, is a part of the company’s One Awards scholarship program and granted annually to Black post-secondary students enrolled in an Ontario electricity-related program.
