Uranium Heritage Days Festival Hosts Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre

ELLIOT LAKE, June 29, 2015 – Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre travels to Northern Ontario this week for the annual Uranium Heritage Days Festival in Elliot Lake.

Stop in at the Electricity Discovery Centre and check out our two new exhibits - the Wire Wall and the Pedal-a-Watt. The Wire Wall display offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to safely examine the lines that make up the high voltage transmission system and the low voltage distribution system. The Pedal-a-Watt turns visitors into electricity generators who can use pedal power to run common household electronics.

Held every year during Canada Day, Uranium Heritage Days celebrates the region’s rich mining history. This year’s edition is special because it coincides with Elliot Lake’s 60th anniversary. The event includes a street dance, mine tours, music, midway rides and even a drilling competition.

Fully accessible and free for all ages, the Electricity Discovery Centre will be located at the Lester B. Pearson Civic Centre (255 King’s Highway 108, Elliot Lake) during the following hours:

  • Wednesday, July 1 – 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 2 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Friday, July 3 – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, July 4 – 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, July 5 – 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

“Hydro One takes its commitment to educating its customers seriously. We believe our Electricity Discovery Centre is an important investment for our customers and how we educate and interact with them,” said Carmine Marcello, President and CEO, Hydro One.

Since its launch in 2013, the Electricity Discovery Centre has participated in more than 40 events across the province with 95 per cent of visitors saying they would recommend visiting to family and friends.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is a 1,000-square foot state-of-the-art mobile education trailer with hands-on, interactive exhibits that explain Ontario’s power system, help customers manage their electricity costs, and educate children about electricity safety.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is staffed by ambassadors who engage and educate visitors, offering tours through the various exhibits, helping customers with the various touchscreens and answering questions on anything from understanding billing to modernizing outage detection and restoration.

Another popular feature is the unique Solar Charging Station, which allows visitors to recharge their tablets and smartphones with renewable energy from the sun while they enjoy their Electricity Discovery Centre experience.

Children learn about electricity safety by meeting Ellie, the virtual leader of the Kids’ Electricity Safety Team, and becoming members by finding 11 electrical hazards around the home.
