Alight at Night Hosts Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre

MORRISBURG, December 2, 2015 – Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre travels to Eastern Ontario this weekend for Alight at Night.

The St. Lawrence Park Commission event attracts thousands to Upper Canada Village over the holiday season to tour dozens of heritage buildings decorated in Christmas lights.

Stop in at the Electricity Discovery Centre and check out our two new exhibits - the Wire Wall and the Pedal-a-Watt. The Wire Wall display offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to safely examine the lines that make up the high voltage transmission system and the low voltage distribution system. The Pedal-a-Watt turns visitors into electricity generators who can use pedal power to run common household electronics.

Fully accessible and free for all ages, the Electricity Discovery Centre will be open during the following Alight at Night evenings:

  • Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 6 – 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 10 to Sunday, December 13 – 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 17 to Sunday, December 20 – 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Since its launch in 2013, the Electricity Discovery Centre has participated in over 50 events across the province with 95 per cent of visitors saying they would recommend visiting to family and friends.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is a 1,000-square foot state-of-the-art mobile education trailer with hands-on, interactive exhibits that explain Ontario’s power system, help customers manage their electricity costs, and educate children about electricity safety.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is staffed by ambassadors who engage and educate visitors, offering tours through exhibits, helping customers with the various touchscreens and answering questions on anything from understanding billing to modernizing outage detection and restoration.

Another popular feature is the unique Solar Charging Station, which allows visitors to recharge their tablets and smartphones with renewable energy from the sun while they enjoy their Electricity Discovery Centre experience.

Children learn about electricity safety by meeting Ellie, the virtual leader of the Kids’ Electricity Safety Team, and becoming members by finding 11 electrical hazards around the home.
