Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre Visits Orillia

Sep 28, 2016

ORILLIA, September 28, 2016 – Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre returns to Orillia for the first time since 2013 for two events this week in the Simcoe County city.

The Electricity Discovery Centre will be set up at Orillia City Hall on September 29 during the following hours.

  • Thursday, September 29 – 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, September 29 – 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The Electricity Discovery Centre will relocate to Orillia Home Depot for two days in the parking lot at the home improvement centre. The Saturday is also the annual Safety Event at the Orillia Home Depot.

The interactive display is fully accessible and free for all ages and will be open during the following hours:

  • Friday, September 30 – 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, October 1 – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Since its launch in 2013, the Electricity Discovery Centre has participated in more than 75 events across the province with 95 per cent of visitors saying they would recommend visiting to family and friends.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is a 1,000-square foot state-of-the-art mobile education trailer with hands-on, interactive exhibits that explain Ontario’s power system, help customers manage their electricity costs, and educate children about electricity safety.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is staffed by ambassadors who engage and educate visitors, offering tours through the various exhibits, helping customers with the various touchscreens and answering questions on anything from understanding billing to modernizing outage detection and restoration.

Check out the Electricity Discovery Centre’s two newest exhibits - the Wire Wall and the Pedal-a-Watt. The Wire Wall display offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to safely examine the lines that make up the high voltage transmission system and the low voltage distribution system. The Pedal-a-Watt turns visitors into electricity generators who can use pedal power to run common household electronics.

Another popular feature is the unique Solar Charging Station, which allows visitors to recharge their tablets and smartphones with renewable energy from the sun while they enjoy their Electricity Discovery Centre experience.

Children learn about electricity safety by meeting Ellie, the virtual leader of the Kids’ Electricity Safety Team, and becoming members by finding 11 electrical hazards around the home.
