The Village of Warkworth hosts the Electricity Discovery Centre at the 8th Annual Warkworth Lilac Festival

TORONTO, May 23, 2018 - Hydro One’s Electricity Discovery Centre travels to the historic Village of Warkworth this weekend for the opening of the award-winning “Warkworth Lilac Festival.”  Weekend festivities are packed with activities for the entire family as well as the gardener and lilac enthusiast.

Fully accessible and free for all ages, the Electricity Discovery Centre will be located just off Main Street at the entrance of the Millennium Lilac Trail and open during the following hours:

  • Saturday, May 26 – 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 27 – 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Since its launch in 2013, the Electricity Discovery Centre has participated in over 100 events across the province with 95 per cent of visitors saying they would recommend visiting to family and friends.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is a 1,000-square foot state-of-the-art mobile education trailer with hands-on, interactive exhibits that explain Ontario’s power system, help customers manage their electricity costs and educate children about electricity safety.

The Electricity Discovery Centre is staffed by ambassadors who engage and educate visitors, offering tours through the various exhibits, helping customers with various touchscreens and answering questions on anything from understanding billing to modernizing outage detection and restoration.

Visitors to the Electricity Discovery Centre can meet one-on-one with a Hydro One Customer Service Representative. Customers can bring their questions along with their account number for helpful on-site service.

While in the Electricity Discovery Centre, be sure to check out its new exhibits - the Wire Wall and the Pedal-a-Watt. The Wire Wall display offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to safely examine the lines that make up the high voltage transmission system and the low voltage distribution system. The Pedal-a-Watt turns visitors into electricity generators who can use pedal power to run common household electronics.

Another popular feature is the unique Solar Charging Station, which allows visitors to recharge their tablets and smartphones with renewable energy from the sun while they enjoy their Electricity Discovery Centre experience.

Children learn about electricity safety by meeting Ellie, the virtual leader of the Kids’ Electricity Safety Team, and becoming members by finding 11 electrical hazards around the home.
