Hydro One planting three trees for each one removed to keep transmission system operating safely

- Company supporting sustainable communities while investing in reliable power for Toronto -

TORONTO, January 26, 2021 – Today, Hydro One announced it is investing in its transmission system and the safe and reliable delivery of power to Toronto and the surrounding areas by ensuring safe distances are maintained between trees and power lines along five key electricity corridors in the city. As part of its commitment to operating safely and supporting sustainable communities, the company will support the replanting of three trees for each one removed through the City of Toronto’s Urban Forestry initiative.

“We recognize electricity corridors are often enjoyed as trails or parks, however we must ensure safe distances are maintained between trees and power lines so that we can continue to power strong cities like Toronto,” said Teri French, Vice President, Forestry, Hydro One. “Hydro One is committed to operating safely in an environmentally and socially responsible manner to build a brighter future for all. We are proud to support the City’s Urban Forestry initiative which will result in approximately three new trees planted for every tree removed that could pose a threat to the safety and reliability of Toronto’s power supply.”

Hydro One’s highly-skilled arborists have started work on a number of electricity corridors, after engaging and notifying affected communities, property owners and stakeholders. Work includes trimming branches or removing trees that pose a threat to the safe operation of the transmission system on the following corridors:

  • Leaside Transmission Station (TS) to Bridgman TS (including Robertson Davies Park)
  • Wilshire TS to Bridgman TS (along the Green Line)
  • Manby TS to Wiltshire TS
  • Richview TS to Claireville TS
  • Leaside Transmission Station (TS) to Lake Ontario (including the Don Valley)

Hydro One will work with the City of Toronto to ensure that the new trees are planted in locations across the city that will not interfere with the safe operation of its transmission system.
