Hydro One and London Hydro honour life and career of world-renowned researcher and engineer Dr. R. ‘Mohan’ Mathur

New plaque installed at Hydro One’s Nelson Transmission Station honours Dr. Mathur’s contributions to electricity industry

LONDON, September 14, 2022 – Today, Hydro One and London Hydro unveiled a plaque at Hydro One’s Nelson Transmission Station (TS) in London, Ontario honouring the life of R. Mohan Mathur, PhD, P.Eng, FCAE, a world-renowned researcher of electrical machines and flexible power transmission systems. Appointed to the Order of Canada in 2019, Dr. Mathur made extensive contributions to the engineering, education, and electric utilities industries. Dr. Mathur passed away peacefully on February 6, 2020. 

“Dr. Mathur was an integral part of London Hydro’s success in his lengthy role as a board member from 2005-2012 and as Board Chair from 2012 to 2019,” said Vinay Sharma, CEO, London Hydro. “Dr. Mathur was recognized as a world-renowned researcher in electrical machines and flexible power transmission systems by the Professional Engineers of Ontario, he also received the Order of Canada for his contribution in the electricity-engineering field.”   

“Dr. Mathur was a visionary in the electrical utilities industry and a catalyst of change locally, across Canada and around the world,” said Jason Fitzsimmons, Chief Corporate Affairs & Customer Care Officer, Hydro One. “An incredible researcher, educator and engineer, Dr. Mathur’s impact on the engineering profession will be felt for generations to come.”

Most of all, his legacy lives on in all of us,” said Ed Holder, Mayor, City of London. “When we treat people with compassion, with dignity, and with respect, we not only do right by them, we honour the memory of our friend, and one of the greatest Londoners this city has ever known – Dr. Mohan Mathur.” 

In addition to his work as an engineer, Dr. Mathur had a distinguished academic career as a teacher and a researcher. Dr. Mathur led many innovative initiatives at the University of Manitoba, the University of Western Ontario, Ontario Power Generation, Hydro One, and London Hydro. He also founded the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering, an initiative promoting research and training for engineering students through a consortium of 11 universities across Canada and the nuclear power industry that receives grants from the Government of Canada.
