-Hydro One reminds Ontarians to be prepared in case of an emergency-
TORONTO, May 5, 2017 /CNW/ - Next week is Emergency Preparedness Week and with spring flooding occurring across Ontario, Hydro One is reminding its customers to stay safe by knowing what to do if your home is flooded.
If water rises above your electrical outlets, baseboard heaters or furnace or is near the electrical panel, call 1-800-434-1235 to have your power disconnected. If any water damage to electrical equipment occurs, a Licensed Electrical Contractor needs to conduct an evaluation and make any necessary repairs before Hydro One can restore power.
In case of an extended power outage, here are some items to include in an emergency preparedness kit:
- Water (2L per person per day)
- Canned or dried food that won't spoil
- Food and water for pets
- Manual can opener
- Windup or battery-powered flashlight and radio
- Batteries for flashlight and radio
- Power bank for your cell phone
- Cash
- Any medical items you require
- Blanket
- Candles and matches
- First aid kit
- Emergency numbers including Hydro One's power outage hotline, 1-800-434-1235
For essential communications, ensure you have at least one corded phone at home as a cordless phone will not work in a power outage. Hydro One customers can also register to receive proactive personalized text or email alerts about power outages affecting their local area. Customers can register for these alerts online at hydroone.com/myaccount or download our free outage app.
Hydro One's Customer Contact Centre is also open extended hours on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and recently opened Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Centre is also open 24 hours a day for power outages and other emergencies.
