Hydro One supports community planting in Hamilton and Burlington

- Company investing in safe and reliable power for region while building sustainable communities-

Hamilton, ON, February 10, 2022 – Today, Hydro One announced it will support community planting initiatives in the City of Hamilton and the City of Burlington through a $10,000 donation. This donation comes as part of the company’s commitment to supporting sustainable communities while investing in safe and reliable power for the region. Over the next few weeks, Hydro One crews will be ensuring safe distances are maintained between trees and power lines along a key transmission corridor.

“Hydro One is committed to operating safely in an environmentally and socially responsible manner to build a brighter future for all. We are proud to support planting initiatives in Hamilton and Burlington and look forward to working with the communities to increase their urban canopies,” said Teri French, Vice President of Forestry, Hydro One. “We know how important trees and greenspaces are in communities, and we aim to balance the needs of a safe and reliable electricity system while managing impacts to the local environment.”

"The City of Hamilton is committed to increasing our urban tree canopy coverage and this donation will help support the planting of hundreds of trees this coming spring. The City looks forward to future opportunities to work alongside community partners and organizations such as Hydro One to find opportunities to plant trees across Hamilton," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

“I am happy to work with Hydro One on this donation for tree replacement. Growing the tree canopy has been a strategic priority for this Council and it will be my pleasure to direct these funds to that goal. The Forestry section was thrilled to hear this news and accepts this generous donation for future planting,” said Councillor Kelvin Galbraith, City of Burlington.

Hydro One’s highly-skilled arborists have started work along the 12 km transmission corridor between Burlington Transmission Station (TS) and Beach TS, after engaging and notifying affected communities, property owners and stakeholders. Crews will trim or remove hazardous trees and brush which could cause power outages, create unsafe working conditions and impact the safety of the public.

Hydro One will work with the City of Hamilton and the City of Burlington to ensure that the new trees are planted in locations that will not interfere with the safe operation of its transmission system.
