To mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, 20 Indigenous students will each receive a $10,000 scholarship and an opportunity to complete a paid work term at Hydro One

TORONTO, June 21, 2022 – Today, to mark National Indigenous Peoples Day, Hydro One announced the 2022 recipients of the Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Scholarship. A group of 20 Indigenous students from Ontario who are enrolled in a recognized university or college program have been selected to each receive $10,000 and an opportunity to complete a paid work term at Hydro One. The scholarship is named after the Honourable Justice Leonard S. Tony Mandamin, one of the first Indigenous electrical engineering graduates in Ontario.

“Hydro One is committed to meaningful progress along the pathway to Reconciliation, ensuring Indigenous representation at Hydro One and building new partnerships for training, community initiatives and economic development,” said Penny Favel, Vice President, Indigenous Relations, Hydro One. “We congratulate these Indigenous leaders for their achievements and celebrate the bright futures ahead of them.”

The Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Scholarship is part of Hydro One’s commitment to advance meaningful action on Reconciliation which includes building a workforce that is reflective of the diverse communities found across Ontario. This includes increasing the number of Indigenous employees at Hydro One by creating education and employment opportunities for future generations.

This year’s Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Scholarship recipients include:

• Alycia Wabegijig from Six Nations of the Grand River, Marketing & Communications, Mohawk College
• Brooke Morrow from Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Indigenous Studies, University of Ottawa
• Callum Perrault of the Métis Nation of Ontario, Electrical Engineering, University of Waterloo
• Christy Howells from Couchiching First Nation, Business Administration & Human Resources, Lakehead University
• Crystal Harrison-Collin from Wabigoon Lake Ojibway, Indigenous Studies, Laurentian University
• Danis Thomson from Constance Lake First Nation, Civil Engineering, Queen’s University
• Jordon Jensen from Chippewas of Rama First Nation, Computer Programming & Analysis, George Brown College
• Lily Plante from Wahnapitae First Nation, Computer Science, Laurentian University
• Maura McLean of the Métis Nation of Ontario, Indigenous Studies, University of Ottawa

The Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Scholarship is provided by Hydro One in partnership with Indspire, a national Indigenous charity that invests in the education of First nations, Inuit and Métis people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada. Recipients of the Leonard S. (Tony) Mandamin Scholarship are selected by a panel composed of First Nations, Inuit and Métis professionals.
