TORONTO, January 30, 2023 – Today, Hydro One announced it was awarded an Emergency Response Award from Edison Electric Institute (EEI) for the company’s restoration efforts during the devastating May 2022 derecho that left more than 890,000 customers without power. The damage was unprecedented, including a record-breaking 2,000 broken poles, 500 damaged transformers and five downed transmission towers. Responding to the storm involved a large-scale mobilization of Hydro One’s resources who worked tirelessly for several days to make repairs and rebuild local electricity infrastructure.
This is the 13th award Hydro One has received from the EEI for demonstrating its longstanding and industry-leading storm response and restoration efforts.
“When the derecho swept across Ontario, leaving an extraordinary path of destruction in its wake, our dedicated power workers and support staff jumped into action to rebuild the electricity system as quickly and as safely as possible,” said Chong Kiat Ng, Vice President Distribution, Hydro One. “We did not stop until every customer was restored. Thank you to the Edison Electric Institute for recognizing our work to restore power under extremely difficult conditions.”
“Throughout the past six months, electric companies faced devastating hurricanes, unprecedented heat waves, and many other extreme weather events that impacted the customers and communities we serve,” said EEI President Tom Kuhn. “I commend Hydro One’s commitment to restore service for its customers safely and quickly under challenging conditions. Hydro One and its storm response team undoubtedly are deserving of this national recognition, and I am honored to present them with this well-deserved award.”
The Emergency Response Awards are presented to EEI member companies for recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. The winners are chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process.
The EEI is the association that represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies and has more than 65 international electric companies as members, and hundreds of industry suppliers and related organizations as associate members.
