Hydro One powers Toronto’s growth with $73 million investment

The new Etobicoke Greenway transmission line adds capacity and strengthens system reliability in Toronto and the western GTA

TORONTO, July 28, 2026 – Today, Hydro One announced that its Etobicoke Greenway transmission line is now in service. The new six-kilometre, 230-kilovolt transmission line between Richview Transformer Station (TS) and Manby TS in Etobicoke has added approximately 300 megawatts of capacity to the region, enough to power all the homes in Etobicoke, twice. This additional capacity will help meet growing electricity demand and strengthen power reliability across Toronto and the western Greater Toronto Area.

Completed on time and under budget, the transmission line project drew on Hydro One's skilled workforce and supported approximately 100 external jobs during construction. Contractors provided specialized expertise, including equipment operation, site preparation and restoration, and traffic and waste management.

“Reliable and secure electricity powers every part of our daily lives and underpins Ontario's economic future,” said Megan Telford, President and CEO, Hydro One. “Today's milestone shows what is possible when a clear vision for growth is matched with strong delivery. The Etobicoke Greenway transmission line adds critical capacity for Toronto and the western GTA while demonstrating Hydro One's continued ability to deliver complex infrastructure safely, on time and below budget. As Ontario's trusted developer and operator of transmission lines, we play a key role in building an electricity system that supports growth, creates jobs and keeps the province competitive for decades to come.”

As a part of the broader project, Hydro One continues to work with the City of Toronto to build a recreational trail along the transmission corridor. Hydro One plans to host an open house in Etobicoke later this year, to share project details and gather community input on the design. The trail is expected to be completed by early 2027.

“As the GTA experiences unprecedented growth, our government is building a stronger economy and grid for our kids,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines. “Ontario has a plan to keep energy affordable and reliable, by planning ahead and building on time and under budget.  This project was delivered 10 million under budget, allowing us to invest the savings in a large recreational trail system for local families. As we face ongoing threats from the U.S., our government is fortifying the economy by building made-in-Canada transmission lines and nuclear power. As we deliver the largest electricity buildout in a generation, our government will continue to keep costs down for families through the largest Energy Savings Program in Ontario history and the 10-cent reduction to the gas tax."

"Toronto's growing population, expanding transit network and ambitious housing goals depend on a reliable and resilient electricity system,” said Mayor Olivia Chow, City of Toronto. “The completion of the Etobicoke Greenway project is an important step in meeting the energy needs of our city today, while projects like the Toronto Third Line will help prepare us for the future. I welcome this investment in critical infrastructure that supports housing, economic development and a stronger, more sustainable city."
